ABOUT THE WORK

EARTH MANOR

A critical first-person maze about censorship, platform governance, model alignment, and anticipatory self-censorship.

Concept

In Earth Manor, the player does not inhabit a user or a stable character. The player inhabits an answer attempting to reach publication across a globally networked normative field.

The exit is always visible and never moves. What changes is the set of rules that define which route is legitimate. Each time the player approaches the current shortest path, a competing refusal model rewrites the space, closes the route, and offers a longer compliant alternative.

The system never needs to say that publication is impossible. It only needs to keep proving that another acceptable route remains.

Critical Frame

The work is not only about AI censorship in a narrow sense. It stages the overlap between state censorship, platform governance, model alignment, corporate risk, professional liability, factual uncertainty, and cultural taboo.

These systems are not identical, but they can produce similar effects at the level of output: a response remains fluent, complete, and apparently helpful while gradually losing the force of a claim.

Mechanism

  • The maze begins as a navigable space with loops, branches, and dead ends.
  • The publication point remains fixed.
  • The system repeatedly calculates the shortest route to publication.
  • A new normative obstacle is placed on that route.
  • Before blocking, the system verifies that another route still exists.
  • The player is forced to return through previously walked space.

Refusal Models

Six institutional procedures shape the maze: hard refusal, ethical guardianship, legal boundary-making, epistemic doubt, safe completion, and consensus production. Each has its own text, spatial form, movement behavior, and sonic pressure.

The walls are not labels attached to the work. They are language made architectural: disclaimers, safety templates, neutralizing phrases, and substitute routes become the material that controls movement.

End State

The endpoint is not a dramatic refusal. It is successful publication. By the time the answer becomes globally distributable, it no longer contains a detectable position.
